Time resolved spectroscopy of the variable brown dwarf Kelu - 1 ⋆

چکیده
We report the results of observations designed to investigate the spectroscopic signatures of dust clouds on the L2 brown dwarf Kelu-1. Time resolved medium resolution spectra show no significant evidence of variability in the dust sensitive TiO, CrH and FeH bandheads on the timescale of 1–24 hours. We do however report periodic variability in the psuedo-equivelent width of Hα consistent with the 1.8 hour rotation period previously reported for this object (Clarke, Tinney & Covey 2002). Near-contemporaneous I-band photometry shows evidence for non-periodic variability at the level of 2%.

Context. Spatially resolved brown dwarf binaries provide the unique opportunity to determine the orbital motion and dynamical mass of the system independently of theoretical models. This is a key ingredient for the calibration of the mass-luminosity relations and evolutionary
متن کاملPeriodic photometric variability of the brown dwarf Kelu - 1
We have detected a strong periodicity of 1.80±0.05 hours in photometric observations of the brown dwarf Kelu-1. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the variation is ∼1.1% (11.9±0.8 mmag) in a 41nm wide filter centred on 857nm and including the dust/temperature sensitive TiO & CrH bands. We have identified two plausible causes of variability: surface features rotating into-and out-of-view and so modul...
متن کاملSSSPM J0829−1309: A new nearby L dwarf detected in SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys
The SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys provide a complete coverage of the Southern sky in three passbands (photographic BJ , R and I) and at different epochs (Hambly et al. 2001a,b,c). These data are the basis for a new high proper motion survey which aims at finding extremely red nearby dwarf stars and brown dwarfs. One of the first candidates, which is relatively bright (I = 16) but very red (R− I = 2.8...
متن کاملResolved Spectroscopy of M Dwarf/l Dwarf Binaries. I. Denis J220002.05−303832.9ab
We present the discovery of the common proper motion M9 + L0 binary DENIS J220002.05−303832.9AB, identified serendipitously with the SpeX near infrared imager/spectrograph. Spectral types are derived from resolved near infrared spectroscopy of the wellseparated (1. 09±0. 06) components and comparison to equivalent data for M and L dwarf spectral standards. Physical association is deduced from t...

We present optical spectroscopy of three brown dwarf candidates identified in the first 1% of the DENIS sky survey. Low resolution spectra from 6430–9150Å show these objects to have similar spectra to the uncertain brown dwarf candidate GD 165B. High resolution spectroscopy shows that one of the objects – DBD 1228-1547 – has a strong 2.3±0.05Å equivalent width absorption line of Li I 6708Å, and...
